Trish Murphy, Ph.D., LMFT
After over two decades of private practice experience, Dr. Trish Murphy joined the staff of Family Psychology Associates in 2008. She is one of the most highly trained marriage and family therapists in the Tampa Bay area. As a Clinical Member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT) Dr. Murphy has been elected to office and served on a variety of professional boards. She is a licensed professional clinical supervisor and participates in the continued development of her colleagues. Most recently, she completed her credentials in Substance Abuse counseling (CADCI) in Oregon. She is currently working on her national and Florida certification in Substance Abuse counseling.
Dr. Murphy completed her first graduate degree in Clinical Psychology in 1974 and completed her training in adult and adolescent therapy the same year. She practiced in a variety of settings and was originally licensed as a Mental Health Counselor (MHC). Returning to complete her doctoral degree, Dr. Murphy graduated with her PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy (LMFT) in 1986 and was licensed as an LMFT in 1986. Prior to joining Family Psychology Associates, Dr. Murphy worked a sabbatical year in an Oregon Wilderness Treatment Program for addicted adolescents. She supervised young, developing therapists while she worked with the families left at home when the teens were out in wilderness treatment. Her sabbatical year reawakened her passion for nature and brought new perspective to her clinical skills.
Trish Murphy, PhD, celebrates the diversity of the American family. Dr. Murphy enjoys working with the issues specific to active duty military, veterans and their families and she does accept Tricare insurance. Dr. Murphy sees divorced adults, stepfamilies and GLBT families to name just a few of the many diverse forms of family life.
Dr. Murphy sits on a variety of insurance panels and by checking with our support staff it is easy to know if your policy will cover her service.
Dr. Murphy’s extensive experience and lengthy credentials cannot document her deeply held belief that being a therapist is an honor and trust. On the rare occasion when Dr. Murphy determines during the initial appointment that she is not the right therapist for your needs, she can refer to other staff of Family Psychology Associates or to colleagues in the community with whom she regularly consults.
Because stress, depression and anxiety affect the whole of a person, Dr. Murphy sometimes recommends Mindfulness, yoga or cardiovascular exercise be incorporated to more traditional approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Whether our values come from life, religion, spirituality, values are a core resource. Often values are the very resource that can not only build effective behavior but also add to the experience of the poetry of one's life.
