A native Floridian, Dr. Cole was born and raised in Clearwater, graduating Clearwater High School in 1961. After completing his Bachelors degree at Davidson College in North Carolina, he received his Masters and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology at Florida State University, where he was trained in behavior modification and served two summer internships at Veterans Administration Hospitals in Mississippi and South Carolina. Following his clinical internship at Letterman General Hospital, in San Francisco, where he trained in psychodynamic and Gestalt treatment approaches, Dr. Cole spent 6 years as an Army psychologist, first directing outpatient psychological services at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, DC, and later directing psychological services at the Mental Hygiene Consultation Service of Madigan General Hospital in Tacoma, WA. After completing his military service, Dr. Cole directed the Counseling Center and taught Psychology at Catawba College in North Carolina, and he then organized psychological services at a 5 county mental health clinic in northern Wisconsin. In 1979, Dr. Cole became Director of Psychology at the Thomas B. Finan Center, a 200 bed inpatient psychiatric hospital in Cumberland, MD, operated by the state of Maryland. While providing diagnostic and therapeutic patient services, Dr. Cole pursued his interest in neuropsychological assessment and forensic evaluation of the trial competency and criminal responsibility of hospitalized patients. He also operated a small private practice, focusing on geriatric psychology and consulting with nursing homes to assure that the psychological needs of residents were assessed and met. In 2002, Dr. Cole retired and returned to Florida to care for his aging and ailing parents. Unready to entirely leave clinical practice, he consulted with several nursing facilities; and, in August of 2007, he joined the staff of Family Psychology Associates, bringing his rich history of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals and families, with special attention to serving the mental health needs of seniors and their families.
